We, at Elgin County Midwives, take great pride in the excellent care that we provide to our clients. Unfortunately, sometimes a client may have some concerns or serious questions about their care. We take these concerns very seriously. We have a policy for addressing these concerns. It starts with reaching out to the midwife in question and speaking with her. If you are unable to do that, then please reach out to one of the practice partners.
Midwives are regulated by the College of Midwives of Ontario. Here is some information about what they do from their website:
The College of Midwives of Ontario is the regulator of midwives in the province of Ontario.
The CMO regulates more than 1,000 midwives practising in Ontario by:
- Ensuring that midwives meet high standards, and
- Acting when risks are identified.
The midwifery profession includes solo midwife practices and big practices. Midwives provide care in a variety of settings including homes, clinics, hospitals, and birth centres. All midwives follow the same professional principles and standards of practice. The CMO provide guidance to help them do so.
The College also regulates two midwife-led Ontario birth centres that serve clients in the Ottawa and Toronto regions. The College regulates these facilities in accordance with the Independent Health Facilities Act, 1990 by conducting quality assurance assessments and developing Clinical Practice Parameters to be followed by both birth centres.
Their purpose is to protect the public and the public interest.
If you are concerned enough about the care you received with your midwife, you have the right to file a complaint with the college.
